Myth Monsters card deck

Illustration

2024-02-10

The theme of my card deck is monsters from mythology, with each suit representing a different mythology: Hearts feature Greek creatures, Diamonds showcase Norse beings, Spades highlight Egyptian entities, and Clubs embody Japanese folklore.

The face cards are organized into two distinct groups—the mythology of their suit and the type of card they represent. For example, all Queen cards depict prominent female monsters from their respective mythology, while Jacks consistently feature serpent-like creatures.

Each monster is designed to reflect the shape of its suit, a motif that is echoed in the line decorations surrounding the card. For the Joker card, I chose a Fae, as these mystical tricksters appear in nearly every mythology with subtle variations. Known for their unpredictable nature, shifting between benevolence and mischief, I feel they represent the Joker’s role perfectly.

The back of each card showcases a design woven from traditional patterns of the respective mythologies. A classic Greek meander frames the border, while repeating arcs reference Japanese motifs. An Egyptian triangular pattern surrounds the central element—a traditional Norse knot symbolizing protection from evil.
